Father's Day Gift Guide for the Construction Professional

June 4, 2015 Shane Hedmond
fathers day gift construction

Father's Day is June 21 this year and there's still time to get your dad the present he wants and maybe even deserves.  We've compiled a list of great gift options with the construction professional in mind.  If you have other suggestions, we'd love to hear them in the comments section below!

For the Dad Who Likes Quality: Hardcore Hammer

hardcore hammer

Hardcore Hammers claim to be “one hammer to rule them all”, because it combines a finish and a framing hammer all in one.  With a recessed milled insert forged from steel and a smooth outer rim, it won’t tear up your walls when you go from framing to finish. The original Hardcore Hammers come with an 18 inch long handle, the head weighs 19 ounces, and are built in the USA.

For the Dad Who Works Outside: Ergodyne Cooling Safety Vest

construction cooling vest

The Ergodyne Cooling Vest doubles as a safety vest and a body temperature regulator for when your dad is out on the job site throughout the hot summer months.  This vest has removable cooling packs that maintain a constant 58 degrees for up to 4 hours at a time.  Keep a second pack in the cooler when the first one warms up and you’re covered for most of the day!

For the Dad Who’s A Little Rough: Casio G-Shock Watch

Construction isn’t for the faint of heart and it certainly isn’t for watches that can’t put up with a little stress.  Regular watches don’t stand a chance in the field, but there’s no tougher watch than the Casio G-Shock DW6900MS-1.  This watch is water resistant to 200 meters, shock resistant, and features a resin wristband.  Want to know just how touch it is?  Watch the video below to see it get smashed with a hammer multiple times and still work.

For the Dad Who Likes Technology: Pelican Phone and Tablet Cases

Just like with most watches, smart phones and tablets aren’t built to keep up with the demand of a job site, but the industry is relying more and more heavily on their use.  Whether it’s drops, dust, or moisture, there are plenty of things that can damage them.  Pelican ProGear provides solutions for Samsung Galaxy phones, iPhones, and iPads that can keep the elements out of your phone and keep them damage free and working. The video below shows just how much its iPad case can put up with:

For the Dad Who Likes to Create: Handibot

The Handibot, the most expensive gift idea on our list is a handheld computer numerically controlled mill, which allows the user to program shapes and designs on the computer and send those designs to your Handibot to cut out.  This allows you to create the same cuts and shapes over and over again for consistency.  The Handibot can be controlled by simple apps on your phone or tablet, so there’s no need to learn complicated programs.  Video below gives a demo on how the machine works:

[VIDEO] Baubot, the Robot That Wants to Be Every Trade on the Jobsite
Apr 28, 2021

While still new in the construction industries, robots are typically designed to perform a specific task in a highly precise and efficient way, like the rebar tying robot, Tybot or the brick-laying robot Hadrian X. More recently, though, robots are being imagined as platforms for 3rd party companies to develop hardware and accessories to attach to the base robot, like the Boston Dynamics robotic dog, Spot. I recently came across a new robot, called Baubot, which hopes to one day perform tasks using every tool on a typical jobsite.

Doosan Announces Industry First “Transparent Bucket” to Wheel Loader to Eliminate Blind Spots
Mar 15, 2021

“You make a better door than a window!” is what I imagine loader operators constantly yell at the bucket in front of them (or maybe I’m just projecting based on my experience of having the habit of sitting right in front of the TV as a kid). Either way, operators may not be yelling that in the future, as equipment manufacturer, Doosan, has introduced what they claim is an industry first “transparent” bucket.

Reducing dust when cutting tile is important for many reasons (including safety and cleanliness), but wet tile saws can be a pain to use, with the slurry created spraying all around the work station and cold weather making the saw much more difficult to use outside. iQ Power Tools has a solution for that: the world’s first 7” portable dry table saw with integrated dust control.
